WATCH: Guy Ritchie’s Live-Action Version of ‘Aladdin’ Gets Its First Trailer | Anglophenia

The first teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin has been released, almost two years to the day since we first heard Guy Ritchie would be directing it.

There’s no sign yet of Power Rangers‘ Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, or Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as the evil sorcerer Jafar, but we do get a glimpse of the new flesh-and-blood Aladdin, played by newcomer Mena Massoud.

It also shows a CGI-animated parrot, presumably Jafar’s wisecracking assistant Iago, gently glide over the desert until it reaches Agrabah, the city of mystery and enchantment. But he doesn’t speak, so there’s still no clue as to which actor will replace Gilbert Gottfried as his voice.

The biggest non-appearance of all, however, is Will Smith, who plays the Genie, the character voiced so brilliantly by the late Robin Williams in the original 1992 animated movie. Will did share the first poster on Instagram though, which is technically a self-portrait, given how Genie is trapped in the magic lamp.

How about that for a crick in the neck.

The trailer will also come as some relief to fans of the original movie. It’s fair to say the news two years ago that the director behind Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) would helm the live version of Aladdin was met with some skepticism.

The trailer’s description claims Guy brings his “singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah,” via the official Walt Disney Studios YouTube page.

Aladdin hits theaters May 24, 2019.

Are you excited to see Guy Ritchie bring Aladdin to life?
